I have Ehlers - Danlos Syndrome and so my body is never comfortable (I dislocate things while I sleep). I have about 5 pillows that I cycle through - everything from soft foam to firm memory foam to a water pillow. We have firm bed with some memory foam - but truthfully, I dream of a pure foam mattress! I also sleep with an extra long body pillow we call "Pat"! It helps support my pelvis, knees, and ankles as well as shoulders when I sleep - at least until I turn over and forget to bring Pat with me!

Did you know that dried hops work wonders? You can buy dried hops on amazon. You can then put them in a little bag and put them beside your pillow. They will make anyone with insomnia fall asleep and hops are completely natural. In fact they are so good that the workers who were collecting them from the trees in Germany fell asleep beside the tree! Lavender also works very good too. In fact, to be even more effective, you could make a mixture of lavender and hops. However, always consult with your doctor before you try any of the remedies. I am making no claims whatsoever.

Hi susi10, that's such great validation - that the workers fell asleep while collecting hops. I hope the boss understood their challenge. Thank you for sharing your information about using hops as a sleep aid.

Mattresses are a good start if you are sleeping on a fifteen year old nightmare that may be your problem. This is where it gets tricky, it all depends on the individual, like me for example I love pillow tops they give me that sleeping on a cloud sensation. My husband likes mattresses that are a little firmer than what I do, but we generally can agree on something in the middle.
Next i think would be sheets they are what you lie on every night, in my opinion the silk or satin are to slippery, although they stay nice and cool in summer. I like cotton its comfy, and it breathes which is good, because my husband sweats.
i also have to have a comfortable blanket, I don't like them to heavy but to light and I am freezing. When it comes down to pillow they cost a bit more, but feather pillows are amazing, they keep cool and hold shape well.
All in all i find that the pillow is the hardest part for me to get right, if I am at a friends house and the pillow is lumpy I just can't get to sleep.

It's amazing to think that people slept sitting up, fearing death if they slept lying down at night. I agree that the "foundation" to a good night's sleep is the environment. Must not have tv in your room, should be dark and peaceful.

Flannel sheets in winter. Awesome! Especially if you sleep with no clothes on. Then its cuddle city and warm. Discovered the concept first when a Peace Corps volunteer in Africa. Slept in a cold concrete house with no heater. The only (and best) way I could keep warm at night was to strip down and wrap myself up in a blanket. When I got back to the States I started buying flannel sheets for winter and have been happy with them ever since.
